Mother Moira Writes
Last Sunday night many folk, both clergy and lay, gathered at the church of St Luke’s, Wallsend to pray and express their sorrow for the terrible instances of child abuse that occurred in our diocese. In a moving liturgy of repentance using scripture, music and powerful symbolism we stood with our bishop united and with a common resolve that the abuse must never happen again.
I write this reflection having just watched a segment on the 7:30 report about the abuse of children by clergy and others in the Diocese of Newcastle. Bishop Greg and Diocesan staff, Michael Elliott and John Cleary were interviewed on their efforts to expose the secrets and lies from the past. Each have faced threats of violence for their bravery. Let’s keep Bishop Greg, Michael and John in our prayers.
